The project

Hydroville is the first certified passenger shuttle that uses hydrogen to power a diesel engine. Hydrogen has the advantage of releasing no CO2, particulate matter or sulfur oxides when burned.

The shuttle will be mainly used as a platform to test hydrogen technology for commercial seagoing vessels.

In the first phase, the Hydroville will transport people from Kruibeke to Antwerp during rush hour to avoid traffic jams. Occasionally, the vessel will also be used for meetings/dinners on board or to organize a trip in the Port of Antwerp. It will also function as a demonstration platform for hydrogen and will travel to events in Europe. In addition, during the summer holidays, the vessel can be used to organize trips to the offshore wind turbine parks on the Belgian coast from Oostende/Zeebrugge.

Scope

The vessel will mainly be deployed from Kruibeke to De Gerlachekaai during in mornings and evenings to bring commuters to and from their workplace in the Belgica Building. Occasionally, the vessel will also be used for meetings/dinners on board or to organize a trip in the Port of Antwerp. It will also function as a demonstration platform for hydrogen and will travel to events in Europe. In addition, during the summer holidays, the vessel can be used to organize trips to the offshore wind turbine parks on the Belgian coast from Oostende/Zeebrugge.

Building timeline (2017)

  • January: start of production

  • September: hydrogen outfitting + test run engines
  • October: preparation of the sea trials
  • November: completion of the sea trials and transit to Antwerp

Accommodation

The shuttle was completely redesigned and now contains four comfort sofas with two tables in between, where there used to be 13 business seats that could be mounted in 3 different configurations. There is also a sound system with a microphone and flat screen television, so that giving presentations is easier. There is a fully equipped kitchen on board and a toilet. To increase comfort, additional soundproofing has been installed and 2 air conditioning units have been provided. There is free WiFi on board and built-in USB chargers are available. At the back there is an open terrace where there is the possibility to place two standing tables. The sound system is also available here so that you can easily follow a presentation from outside.
