Competition: “Build the ship of the future”

All Year 5 and 6 classes at Flemish primary schools (children aged 10-12) were eligible to participate in the competition organised by the CMB, “Build the ship of the future”, until 10 November. There was a short, simple animation film about hydrogen technology to inspire the children. Jury members Silvia Lenaerts (Vice-Rector of the University of Antwerp), Reina Ollivier (children’s author), Dixie Dansercoer (polar explorer and adventurer) and Marc Saverys (Chairman of CMB) evaluated all entries in terms of their creativity, sustainable vision, completeness and feasibility.
The ultimate winners of the competition were the 5th Year and Year 6 pupils at the Edegem municipal primary school Andreas Vesalius, who were named the sponsor of the Hydroville. Their movie can be seen on this link.
A selection of the entries will also be included in an exhibition about hydrogen (open to visitors by appointment) in the CMB buildings in Antwerp. The designs will also be used on the CMB 2018 calendar, which is devoted entirely to the Hydroville.

Demonstration vessel

In the initial phase, the Hydroville will transport CMB employees between Kruibeke and Antwerp during the rush hour, to avoid the traffic jams. The ship will occasionally be used for meetings or dinners on board, or to organise a trip to the Port of Antwerp. It will also function as a base for demonstrating the use of hydrogen in shipping, and will be sent out to attend events all around Europe in this context. Furthermore, the ship can also be used for excursions to the wind farms off the Belgian coast in holiday periods, when there are fewer traffic jams.
